Christmas Markets of Strasbourg, France

Strasbourg France Christmas Market

The Capital of Christmas You Haven’t Been To… yet.

If you’ve ever dreamed of stepping straight into a storybook, complete with cobblestone streets, twinkling lights, and the smell of mulled wine floating through the air, then Strasbourg, France needs to be on your bucket list for Christmas market destinations. Nestled right on the border of France and Germany, Strasbourg is old-world adorable in every possible way. Think Beauty and the Beast vibes, with a touch of French luxury and just enough sparkle to make you feel like you’re in your very own holiday movie.

This city has been standing tall since the 1500s, and the architecture proves it. Every corner feels like it’s been preserved from another time. With half-timbered homes, floral balconies, and narrow alleys, this city feels like you’ve been whisked away into a fairytale. It’s the Capital City of Europe and full of rich history, but it’s not nearly as tourist-saturated as Paris. Honestly, I don’t think Americans visit here nearly enough… and I’m here to say, you absolutely should.

Strasbourg France at Christmastime

capital de noËL

Strasbourg truly creates the perfect backdrop for Christmas. The main square at Place Kléber transforms into a winter wonderland and becomes home to one of the oldest Christmas markets in the world. Complete with massive, sparkling Christmas tree that towers above the market to a soundtrack of festive music. At every turn you can find local artisans, warm pastries, and steaming mugs of vin chaud (mulled wine) that perfume the streets in a way that’s just fabulous.

The city’s cathedral, the Notre-Dame de Strasbourg, might be Paris’s lesser-known sister, but she’s every bit as breathtaking (maybe even dare I say, MORE breathtaking.) Unlike the Parisian version that stands alone in all its grandeur, Strasbourg’s cathedral reveals itself more gradually. Tucked among the surrounding buildings, you cross through corridors until it magically appears before you, towering and magnificent. The intricate details of the stonework will stun you.

And then, just when you think you’ve seen it all, you stumble upon a carousel, dressed up for Christmas and spinning gently in front of the Strasbourg Cathedral. It’s truly the stuff of pure magic.

If you’re into exploring the city, Petit France is the neighborhood to get lost in. It’s where you get to admire old houses that sit just over the canals and discover little cafés tucked between bridges. It’s romantic, picturesque, and somehow still feels local despite being impossibly charming. When you’re ready to eat, order the mushrooms. I had a dish of mushrooms soaked in champagne, rosemary, and crème, served over spätzle that I still think about to this very day.

Places to Stay in Strasbourg France

Suite Dreams in Strasbourg

As far as places to stay in Strasbourg, La Maison Rouge is a fabulous Marriott Bonvoy property (an Autograph Collection Hotel) that feels both historic and bougie in the best way. The entire hotel is steeped in history with just the right amount of modern amenities, including an over the top spa to cure your jet lag. The interiors are cozy and luxurious, and very French. Think old-world charm meets French sophistication, with plush textures, picturesque views, and Le 1387, a restaurant that practically begs you to order a glass of wine and linger. This hotel gives 4 Diamond vibes with average American hotel pricing. An amazing score.

But let’s be honest, the real star here is the spa. You could easily spend an entire afternoon here and call it cultural immersionfor your pores.

The atmosphere is warm and hushed, like stepping into a secret escape that you hope no one else finds out about. Their spa might actually be one of my favorites in the world, complete with a sauna, steam room, and Turkish-style bath. They use Vinésime, a product line made from unused wine grapes, which create a unique scent that permeates you with high quality oils in a very individualized way. It gives the entire experience a subtle, intoxicating scent that I’ve yet to experience elsewhere. I still wear their Pinot Noir perfume to this day, because it takes me back to that unique sense of relaxation that only time spent in France can produce.

Getting there is easier than you’d think. Strasbourg connects beautifully through major European airports like Paris, Frankfurt, and Zurich, all of which offer short connecting flights or scenic train rides into the city. Whether you’re flying from New York, Minneapolis, or LA, a connection through one of these hubs will get you there effortlessly. And trust me, it’s worth every mile.

Strasbourg, France will awaken that magical Christmas feeling you had when you were young. It’s where centuries-old cathedrals and cobblestone streets meet chic hotels and indulgent spa days. Where you can wander through a 16th-century square one minute and sip champagne-soaked mushrooms the next. It’s authentic, charming, and just the right amount of bougie (my favorite travel combo). So if you’re looking to switch things up this holiday season and skip the overcrowded markets, the tourist clichés, and the predictable plans, gift yourself an experience that actually feels like how Christmas is supposed to.
